PREPARATION OF SAMPLE MOULD IN SAND CASTING

  1. Moulding sand is prepared by mixing suitable amount of clay and water.

2. Place the pattern on moulding board with its flat side on the board.

3. Place drag over board after giving a clay wash inside.

4. Sprinkle the pattern and moulding board with parting sand.

5. Allow the loose sand preferably through a riddle over the pattern until it’s covered to a depth of 2-3 cm.

6. Pack the Moulding sand around the pattern and into the corners of flask with help finger.

7. Place some more sand in flask and pack the pattern with a rammer using the peen end and then with the cylindrical end.

8. Strike off the excess sand from top of surface with the help of Strike of bar.

9. Turn the drag upside down.

10. Blow off loose sand particles with the help of bellow to get a clean smooth upper surface.

11. Place the cope on the top of drag. Locate riser pin on highest point above pattern. Place sprue pin at about 5-6 cm distance from pattern on opposite side of riser pin.

12. Sprinkle parting sand over surface and repeat above steps 5-8.

13. Make holes with vent rod to about 1 cm from pattern.

14. Remove sprue and riser pin carefully. During this wrapped the pin all around to get a enlarge vertical surface for easy withdrawal of pin.

15. Make a funnel shaped hole at top of sprue hole and make pouring basin or pouring cup.

16. Lift the cope and place it aside on its edge.

17. Now remove the pattern with help of draw spike straight up after wrapping it all around.

18. Repair the mould if needed.

19. Now cut the runner from sprue end to mould. Blow off extra loose sand particles.

20. Now place cope above drag part to get a close mould box. Now it’s ready to pour molten metal.
