Non Traditional Machining: Definition, Types, benifits and Limitations

WHAT IS NON TRADITIONAL MACHINING

Non traditional machining process
Non Traditional Machining

Machining process where lathe, Drilling, Milling etc. are used for machining that takes a lot of time, cost and complexity and also gives poor surface finish, accuracy and less production rate.

To overcome above problem non traditional machining process has been introduced that can used to cut any Complex shapes and materials easily.

TYPE OF NON- TRADITIONAL MACHINING

Depending on different aspects Non traditional machining can be classified in following categories,

Type of energy used-

1. Mechanical-

  1. Abrasive jet machining (AJM)
  2. Ultrasonic machining (USM)

B. Chemical

Chemical machining (CHM)

C. Electro-chemical-

  1. Electro Chemical machining (ECM)
  2. Electro Chemical grinding (ECG)

D. Thermo electric-

  1. Iron beam Machining (IBM)
  2. Plasma Arc Machining (PAM)
  3. Electrical Discharge machining (EDM)
  4. Electron Beam Machining (EBM)
  5. Laser Beam Machining (LBM)

Medium to transfer energy-

  1. Through High velocity particulars
  2. Reactive atmosphere
  3. Physical contact
  4. Electrolyte
  5. Electron radiation
  6. Hot gases.

Mechanism of metal removal-

  1. Erosion
  2. Shear
  3. Ionic dissolution
  4. Vaporization
  5. Spark erosion
  6. Chemical ablation.

Sources of energy used-

  1. Hydraulic pressure
  2. Mechanical pressure
  3. Erosive agent
  4. High current and voltage
  5. Ionized gas
  6. Any shape sizes and materials can be machined.

ADVANTAGES OF NON TRADITIONAL MACHINING PROCESS

  1. Premium type of surface finish and smooth machining is possible.
  2. Material can removed with almost no physical contact between tool and workpiece.
  3. Material removal rate is uniform not depend on the harness of metal.
  4. Micro Machining can be done.

DISADVANTAGES OF NON-TRADITIONAL MACHINING

  1. Power consumption per unit volume of material removal per unit time is high.
  2. Machining process is costlier than other processes.
  3. It is necessary for material to be electrically conductive in some particular process like EDM & ECM.
  4. Due to tool wear USM can’t be applied on softer material.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TRADITIONAL AND NON traditional MACHINING PROCESS

Sl No.NON TRADITIONAL MACHININGTRADITIONAL MACHINING
1.Cutting tool may or may not be harder than job piece.Cutting tool must be harder than Job piece
2.Quality surface finish can be achieved.Surface finish is comparatively poor.
3.Micro machining possible.Micro machining is not possible.
4.It’s Costly process. It takes less production cost.
5.Physical contact between tool and workpiece is almost zero.Physical contact must required.
6.Power consumption is High.Less power required.
