ABSTRACT
A vehicle’s suspension system is a shock absorbing parts like springs, sway bar and dampers. it helps to get a smooth by absorbing the energy from various road obstacles and other kinetic impacts. In this Article we discussed about suspension system of 4 wheeler/6 Wheeler Automobile vehicle like leaf spring, torsion bar and it’s troubleshooting.
PURPOSE OF SUSPENSION SYSTEM
- To prevent road shocks from being transmitted to the vehicle components
- To safe the passenger from road shocks.
- To prevent the instabilities of vehicles from pitching, rolling, while in motion.
- Keep the most of tires contact with the road surface.
TYPES OF SUSPENSION SYSTEM
A. Steel spring:-
- Leaf spring,
- Tapered leaf spring,
- Coil spring,
- Torsion bar.
B. Rubber spring:-
- Compression spring,
- Compression shear spring,
- Progressive spring.
C. Plastic spring,
D. Air Spring,
E. Hydraulic spring.
TORSION BAR
Torsion bar is simple a Rod acting in tension and taking shear stresses only. It’s made of heat treated alloy, spring steel. The amount of energy stored per unit weight of material is nearly same as for coil spring. Torsion bar often used with the independent suspension.
LEAF SPRING
Leaf spring is a type of spring made by a number of plates (leaves) stacked above each other in increasing order of sizes. It is used to absorb shocks and vibrations in heavy commercial vehicles like trucks, vans, buses, etc.
DIFFERENT FAULTS OCCURES IN SUSPENSION SYSTEM AND THEIR REMEDY
SL No. | FAULTS | REASONS | REMEDY |
1. | Front wheel low speed shimmy.(Shimmy is a left right vibration of Vehicles, while decelerating from 50 to 30mph.) | a. Uneven type of pressure. b. Loose ball joints. c. Soft front spring. | a. Inflat to correct pressure. b. Replace. Replace. |
2. | Front wheel tramp.( A kind of vibration in axle causes the wheels to bounce or vibrate vertically up & down) | a. Unbalanced wheel. b. Excessive wheel Wear. c. Defective Shock absorber. | a. Balance properly. b. Replace with new one. c. Replace. |
3. | Rough ride. | a. Excessive tyre pressure. b. Defective Shock absorber. c. High friction in suspension. | a. Reduce it to correct pressure. b. Replace. c. Lubricant parts. |
4. | Sway on turn.(When vehicle takes turn and it starts to lean, usually outward) | a. Loose sway bar. b. Sagging or weak Springs. c. Incorrect caster. | a. Tighten the bar to stop vehicle from producing excessive body roll and distributes weight from one side wheel to another side wheel. b. Replace. c. Adjust to correct it. |
5. | Breakage of spring. | a. Overloading b. Loose centre Bolt. c. Loose U-Bolt. | a. Reduce load. b. Tighten the bolts. c. Tighten it. |
6. | Sagging spring. (sinking downwards under weight due to creep) | a. Leaf broken. b. Weak Spring. | a. Replace with new one. b. Replace. |
7. | Noise in suspension system. | Mostly happen due to loose, worn, rebound clips shock absorbing linkage. | Check each parts carefully, repair defective parts or replace it with new. |
