ABSTRACT

A differential gear box is mechanical system that connects the propeller shaft to the rear axle to rotate both wheels at different speed during turning of vehicle. There is many conflicts with the invention of differential gear but it is believed that Onésiphore Pecqueur , French watchmaker patented the first modern automotive differential in 1827 for steam wagon. In this article we study about differential gear box and its common faults and remedies.

PURPOSE OF DIFFERENTIAL GEAR

When a vehicle is taking turn on curve of road outer wheel will have to travel greater distance as compared to inner Wheels. Now think if a car has a solid rear axle without any special mechanism then there is a greater chance of wheel skidding.

To avoid it is important to install some mechanism that reduce speed of inner wheel and increase speed of outer wheel so that speed of both wheel matches with each other just like vehicle is going straight forward, such devices called differential. Differential gear helps both wheel,

  1. To rotate at different speed to prevent wear of tires.
  2. To rotate inner wheel less distance compared to outer wheel.

WORKING OF DIFFERENTIAL GEAR BOX

Let’s understand what happens inside the differential assume vehicle is taking turn and cage is stationary. Then taking one sun gear will cause the other rotate in opposite direction. It means that if left Sun-gear rotate “N” times in a specific time range the right Sun-gear rotate “N” times in opposite direction. This rotation is applicable on normal wheel speed while taking turn.

For Example consider a vehicle with a wheel speed “N” rpm going straight, when it takes right turn, there will be a resistance to the motion of right wheel rotate at “n” rpm. Then the left wheel will rotate forward n rpm. This will give the resultant speed of left wheel as (N+n) rpm and right wheel as (N-n) rpm.

DIFFERENT FAULTS OCCURES IN DIFFERENTIAL GEAR AND THEIR REMEDY
